Donaire TKOs Mexican, Juanma floors Concepcion

07/11/2010 - MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. and Bernabe “The Real Deal” Concepcion suffered contrasting fates in Puerto Rico on Saturday (Sunday in Manila), with the former winning by technical knockout (TKO) and the latter losing by TKO.

Concepcion figured in the main event against Puerto Rican superstar Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey.

However, he faltered in his bid to win Lopez’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight belt after the Puerto Rican scored a 2nd round TKO.

Both fighters went down to canvass in Round 1 which was described by FightFan.com as a “fierce opening round.”

But Lopez gained the upper hand in Round 2, sending Concepcion to the canvass twice. The bout was waived off at 2:37.

The Puerto Rican remained unbeaten with 29 wins (with 26 knockouts) while Concepcion, who is being managed by 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, has 28 wins (with 15 KOs), 4 losses and 1 draw.

Donaire rules

Donaire, meantime, was featured in the supporting main event in “The Challenge” fight card.

He scored a TKO victory over Mexican Hernan “Little Tyson” Marquez in the 8th round to retain his World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight title.

With his recent TKO win, Donaire improved to 24 wins (with 16 KOs) and 1 loss.

Marquez, on the other hand, now has 27 wins (with 20 KOs) and 2 losses. The Mexican’s bout with Donaire was his first attempt to win a world title.

According to PhilBoxing.com, Donaire hit Marquez with a “lethal counter left to the jaw.” While the Mexican beat the count, referee Roberto Ramirez halted the fight.

Sonsona fails

Earlier, Filipino Eden Sonsona (21-6, 7 KOs) was knocked out by Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo (19-2, with 12 KOs) in their 10-round match.

The Puerto Rican fighter scored the KO at 1:05 of Round 9.

He also sent Sonsona down to the canvass with a “clean right straight” in Round 8.

Sonsona apologized for his loss and said he will make it up in his next fight.

“The Challenge” was shown on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday morning. It will be replayed on Studio 23 on Sunday at 7 p.m. (ABS - CBN News)
