Manila batters nail first title

08/01/2010 - The Manila Sharks ended three years of frustration by downing the Cebu Dolphins, 2-1, to win the Dunkin' Donuts Baseball Philippines Series 6 crown Saturday at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City.

Pitcher Jonjon Robles shone brightest for the Harbour Centre-backed Manila squad as he a tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters in another scintillating performance.

The former UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner from University of Santo Tomas, also retired the last 24 batters he faced to be adjudged as the Finals MVP.

It was also Robles who steered the team’s victory in Game 1 of the best-of-three title series.

While Robles frustrated the Dolphins with a variety of pitches, third baseman Niño Tator provided the offensive spark, breaking a 1-1 count in the fifth inning with a run-scoring double which turned out to be the game-winning play of the exciting series.

Tator finished with three hits – all of them double.

Robles, who was acquired by the squad coached by Jhoel Palanog prior to the start of the season, proved to be a strong addition to a squad that already has an ace hurler in national team pitcher Charlie Labrador.

Cebu scored first when Edmer del Socorro scooted home on a groundout by Jonard Pareja in the second inning before Manila first baseman Marvin Malig tied the count with a single that drive home Christian Galedo.
